Firefighters have extinguished a ceiling fire at a North Dunedin school this afternoon.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokeswoman said it was called to Sacred Heart School in North Rd at 12.15pm after a report of a fire in the school's hall.

A Fenz spokesman said two crews from Dunedin and Willowbank managed to extinguish the blaze in the roof of the building quickly, before it spread to other parts of the building.

The cause of the fire in the ceiling space was not yet known.

A witness at the scene said no pupils were required to evacuate as it is the school holidays.
