Volunteer firefighter Lisa Saldivar-Urban, of Mosgiel, carries a dummy victim in the Firefighter Combat Challenge for the Otago and Southland region on Saturday.

Held  at Bland Park, Waitati, the competitive event attracted about 30 entries from mainly volunteer firefighters from around the South Island.

The challenge included climbing a scaffold of stairs, dragging a dummy to safety while suited up with gear, and using a fire hose.

Waitati Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Jeff Burrow said the firefighters had had a ‘‘fantastic’’ time competing with each other.

"The competitors all had a great time. There was some really good training for some of the younger firefighters who had never entered before."

Results: Ben Coley, of Tokanui,  (professional firefighter and volunteer) 1; Tane Rogers, of Oamaru, (volunteer) 2; Vincent Adams, of Oamaru, (volunteer) 3.
