Fire crews reacted quickly to put out a large gorse fire in Pine Hill last night.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said they were called to the scene near Pine Hill Rd at 10pm last night after callers saw flames in the area.

The fire was about 200m by 300m and crews acted quickly before if spread to nearby pine trees, he said.

Four pumps and several rural units were used to stop the blaze and to protect structures in the area from catching fire, he said.

"They threw a high amount of resources at it pretty quickly," he said.

They had it out just before 12.15am, just over two hours after the calls came in, he said.

"That's what we want to hear."
