The kittens huddled together for comfort  as a line-up of potential adoptive owners turned out to find a new pet friend on Saturday.

The event was the first Animal Rescue Network adoption day of the year at the Animal Attraction pet store, and four kittens had already been matched with new owners early in the piece.

Animal Rescue Network NZ founder Ana Andrianova said most of the kittens were noticed on people’s properties, stray or wild, before being picked up by the organisation.

Most were scared or timid at first, but would respond to "general love and care".

The about 20 kittens available on Saturday had been de-sexed and vaccinated.

The Animal Rescue Network had about 250 cats in the care of its volunteers.

Ms Andrianova said adoption days were planned every six weeks  during the summer, when more kittens were rescued.
