Police were trying to eliminate that aspect of student culture, and strong action would be taken against anyone setting nuisance fires, he said.
There would be a heavy police presence in the campus area over Orientation Week.
Police would be on the lookout for non-students who, in previous years, had come into the area primarily to cause trouble, he said.
An accident where a flat balcony collapsed at last year's Six60 concert meant police would also be "proactive'' about students partying on roofs.
"Alcohol and height isn't a good combination,'' he said.
Students should monitor their alcohol consumption and not encourage others to over-consume, Snr Const Woodhouse said.
Students should"pace themselves'' so they did not engage in activities they might later regret.
