Forum aims to improve access for all

Ensuring good access to buildings, footpaths and public transport will be the focus of an Access for All - Dunedin forum to be held in the city next week.

The three-hour forum will start at the Clarkson Room, Regent Theatre, at 10am next Tuesday.

It was to have been held in June but was postponed because of heavy snow.

The forum will feature guest speakers, including staff from the Dunedin City Council, Otago Regional Council and the New Zealand Transport Authority. Registrations can be made through CCS Disability Action until Friday.

The event aims to bring together disabled people, community members and key decision-makers to discuss improving access for everyone in the city.

It focuses primarily on access for disabled people but is also open to anyone interested in improving access for all.

Disabled Persons Assembly community networker Chris Ford said DPA and CCS Disability Action had partnered to hold the forum.

Both organisations realised access issues often affected older people and parents of young children, as well as people with disabilities.

CCS Disability Action acting Southern region manager Mel Smith said having accessible buildings, footpaths, roads and buses benefited everyone, and helped make Dunedin more inclusive.

The forum was being supported by the DCC and funding was being provided by the Ministry of Social Development's Think Differently Fund, he said.
