The Dunedin City Council is offering free parking for shoppers in the central city leading up to Christmas.

Compliance, animal and parking services team leader Peter Hanlin said there would be free parking at nearly 300 on-street car parks from December 21 to 24.

Parking officers would ride ‘‘reindeer scooters’’ and carry Santa sacks with lollies to hand out to children.

Free parking applied to on-street meters marked with a sticker and motorists still needed to adhere to maximum time limits, Mr Hanlin said.

If a vehicle further overstayed an infringement notice would still be issued.
