A $75,000 donation from the Otago Community Trust has given a "huge boost" to volunteers striving to restore an endangered fitting shop building at the Dunedin Gasworks Museum.

The community trust's latest donations totalled $249,000 to 33 organisations, including the gasworks museum, trust chief executive officer Keith Ellwood announced yesterday.

Dunedin Gasworks Museum Trust chairman Barry Clarke was "thrilled" with the donation, which had lifted the trust's overall fundraising total to $120,000, and $50,000 short of its target.

The Dunedin City Council, which owns the gasworks complex, has earmarked the balance of about $500,000 to safeguard the heritage-listed brick building.

An engineering report had warned that the building was "likely to collapse" unless quick action was taken.

The main building contractor, Stevenson and Williams Ltd, this week secured one wall at the fitting shop with 6m-long metal props.

Other larger donations from the community trust included $10,000 to iD Fashion Inc to assist with costs and, in particular, the Emerging Fashion Designer Awards at next year's event, at the Dunedin Railway Station.

The New Zealand Masters Games received $30,000 for its community volunteer programme and the Mornington Bowling Club $30,000 for its new artificial playing surface.

The trust also donated $20,000 to the Ngai Tahu Maori Rock Art Trust towards its new visitor centre in Timaru.
