Gorging on honey kept escaped bees docile

Dunedin Beekeepers' Club member Tom McMurtrie contains a swarm of bees in Dunedin yesterday.

The estimated 30,000 to 40,000 bees were found swarming around an Arthur St home.

Mr McMurtrie went to the property after the owner of the house spotted the bees in a shrub and called for help.

The bees had escaped from a nearby commercial hive and gathered in the neighbouring property, he said.

Mr McMurtrie spent about two hours retrieving the bees, which were "incredibly calm'' because they had consumed a large amount of honey before flying away from their hive.

They were returned to their original hive without further incident, he said.
