Health workers cancel strike action

Health workers have withdrawn the threat of strike action which would have affected about 1000 staff in Otago and Southland.

The Public Service Association (PSA) said this morning it had withdrawn notices of industrial action covering 12,000 health workers across New Zealand after progress was made in mediation.

The 735 Otago and 182 Southland clinical staff (excluding most nurses and doctors) had voted in favour of an overtime ban and walking off the job for two to three hours at a time, over three weeks starting late this month.

Workers were protesting an offered pay rise of 0.7% but that had now been improved after mediation, the PSA said.

No details were given of the improved offer.
