Heavy rain on way for South

Otago's run of sunny weather is expected to end this weekend as a series of fronts from the Tasman Sea moves across southern and central New Zealand.

The MetService has issued severe weather watches for heavy rain and gale force winds across most of the lower South Island.

Heavy rain was predicted for the headwaters of the Otago and North Canterbury lakes and rivers from late today through to tomorrow afternoon, with 100mm to 140mm expected in Fiordland.

"People in these areas are advised rivers and streams may rise rapidly. Slips and surface flooding are possible."

Northwest gales were also expected about exposed inland parts of Otago and Canterbury.

A colder, showery southwest flow is forecast over the South Island on Monday, followed by a colder southwest change bringing snow to the hills and ranges of the southern South Island.
