A retaining wall on Highcliff Rd is one of several sections of the road repaired after slips in the past two years.

The road opened yesterday after $1.7 million of work that began on July 17 to repair three slips on the popular tourist route, and install more than 1km of wire rope barrier by the Soldiers Monument, where the road runs along a drop-away slope.

Otago Peninsula Community Board chairman Paul Pope said the road had been ''off and on'' with closures and had been limited to one lane for the past two years.

The recent closure had been difficult for residents, particularly those who used Sandymount Rd. Those people had up to half an hour added to their journey.

It was good to achieve certainty of use for the road, particularly as the tourist season, and work on safety improvements and a cycle/walkway, had begun on Portobello Rd, Mr Pope said.
