Fan first, owner second. Matt Davey, who became a major Highlanders shareholder late last year, admits as a fan he is going to the next level.

Davey travelled to Johannesburg yesterday to be nearer the action as the Highlanders prepare to take on the Lions early tomorrow (NZ time) in a Super Rugby semifinal.

• Highlanders raring to go

"I went from Vancouver, through New Zealand, Sydney, then to Johannesburg, so it is a long way,'' he said.

"But it is worth it. It's been absolutely amazing. Just being able to work with the guys and know how professionally committed they are to performing.

"I'm a fan but I suppose I'm at the next level.

"I managed to get to Argentina to watch the game there. I watched the last game in Canada on an iPad and man, that was trying at times.''

Davey, the founder and chief executive of TicketDirect, said the ownership had been everything he imagined and more.

"Just the amount of work that goes into putting a team on the field. The players right through from one to 39 ... it's a family who works really hard.''

Davey said his business got started through selling tickets to Highlanders games.

"The whole team has embraced the new ownership with open arms and they're all focused on this weekend. They've been great to deal with.

"I'm just a kid from Canada who started a business and built it around the Highlanders. Now I've been able to invest in a great city and a great sport.''

As for a prediction for the game, he was backing a Highlanders victory and a Chiefs win, which would bring a final in Dunedin.

"That would be amazing.''
