Highway information questioned

The road condition information on State Highway 87 needs more detail, Strath Taieri Community Board chairman Barry Williams says.

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) information on SH87 between Kyeburn and Mosgiel needed to be broken down into two sections: Kyeburn to Middlemarch and Sutton to Outram, Mr Williams said.

Several residents were angry about the ''inconsistent'' information and the board planned to contact NZTA with the suggestion.

• At a recent board meeting in Middlemarch, members discussed the impact of earthquake-strengthening work on buildings in the district.

The board was concerned the ''knee-jerk reaction'' by the Government could spell the end for some churches in the district.

''We've got three nice churches and we will end up with no churches,'' Mr Williams said.

The board planned to investigate cost-effective ways to retain the buildings, he said.

• A decision was made to erect two flagpoles at the cenotaph in Middlemarch this year, to fly a New Zealand and an Australian flag, Mr Williams said.
