Three of the four remaining members of the Otago Mounted Rifles Regiment (from left) Norman McElwee (92), George Johnson (93) and Alec Wilson (93), at Forbury Park Raceway last night at a race event that officially honoured the horses of World War 1.

The fourth member, Alan Anderson (93), was unable to attend.

The other special guest at last night's commemorative event was three-time New Zealand Trotting Cup winner Terror To Love.

Forbury Park Trotting Club chairman John Henderson said more than 18,000 horses were recruited from across New Zealand and only four returned in 1919 after the the war.

''Forbury Park was an integral assembly point, and following WW1, was the venue for commemorative events, so it's appropriate one of our harness racing meetings honours the contribution horses made in WW1.''

The event was Terror To Love's last official appearance before being retired to stud.

The horse was paraded on the track and presented with a specially designed handmade dress rug.

The evening also featured a march-past by the New Zealand Army and representatives from Otago pony clubs.

A commemorative dinner was also held in the Forbury Park function and event centre.
