Tobias Deveraux (13), of Dunedin, won first place in the senior theatre division of RoboCup New Zealand in a national robotics competition for school children on Saturday.

His entry featured coffins that flipped open, glowing skulls, and an axe-wielding bride.

The Kavanagh College pupil was one of 154 competitors, aged between 7 and 17,  in the event.

Held at the Dunedin City Baptist Church,  it attracted teams from Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Christchurch, Ashburton, and Wanaka.
