Huge interest in vegetable co-op

Members of All Saints Church's Otago Healthy Living Trust are finally getting on top of a deluge of interest in a new vegetable buying co-operative.

More than 1300 expressions of interest have been received from people wanting to join the trust's Fruit and Vege Co-op, co-ordinator Nicki Wallis said.

She said they had managed to so far confirm registrations for 700 people and were still working through the rest.

The co-operative will provide vegetable packs, sufficient to feed one person for a week for $3, but the level of interest has been much greater than expected since it featured in The Star on February 12.

Mrs Wallis said they had also signed up 60 new volunteers to help run the co-operative and were looking for more.

Five distribution centres had been confirmed: Mosgiel, South Dunedin, Northeast Valley, Pine Hill and All Saints Church in the student precinct and more could be added later.

She said they would start with 300-400 orders and build from there but they first had to wait until their trust deed was finalised by the Charities Commission.

Two people had been sent to the well-established Fruit and Vege Co-op in Christchurch that feeds more than 3000 people a week to see how they run things.
