International opportunities for Dunedin writers and artists should  occur after five days of literary discussion in the city last week.

The Creative Cities Southern Hui ended on Saturday with a community meeting on the Dunedin City Council’s Ara Toi Otepoti, the city’s arts and culture strategy, at the Dunedin School of Art.

Dunedin was made a city of literature in 2015, making it one of 180 Unesco creative cities around the world.

Dunedin City of Literature director Nicky Page said the five-day event had been a success.

Another was not planned at this stage "but maybe we could apply for future funding because there’s been really positive feedback".

"We’ll certainly look at that."

Ms Page said connections made across the areas of artistic pursuit were an important part of the event.

"The huge opportunity is the opportunity to collaborate across the arts."

She said the other 180 cities would welcome Dunedin ideas or Dunedin people with arts projects who wanted to collaborate.

At the event there had been plenty of discussion between presentations about possible connections and people swapped addresses in order to develop projects.

"Those will definitely emerge.

"I think that there’s any number of projects simmering in the wings to add to our existing projects across the creative cities network."

Cr Aaron Hawkins, who hosted Saturday’s event, said the council had promised to consult  the community on the strategy every three years. It made sense to run it alongside the creative cities hui, he said.

The event featured a line-up of three-minute presentations on a host of arts projects the city has featured recently.

Cr Hawkins said he thought the city was doing a better job in the arts area but if the public wanted more support for the arts, it needed to make that clear during the 10-year plan process in the next few months.

Feedback from Saturday’s event would be included in reports to the 10-year plan.

Cr Hawkins said what Ms Page had done with the resources she had was "phenomenal".

"I’d like to see what she and her team could do with more resourcing."
