'Intoxicated' group moved on by police

Police were called  following a large student party in the Dunedin Botanic Garden on Saturday.

Officers were called to North Dunedin after 5pm following reports of disorder at the drunken gathering in the garden, a police spokeswoman said.

"One hundred students were found to be drinking in the gardens," she said.

"Some were heavily intoxicated. There were some issues with litter in the area.

"The group was moved on by police and there was no fighting and no arrests."

Botanic Garden team leader Alan Matchett said he was present  when police attended, but he could not comment on events.

It is understood a keg party was held at the garden, with several empty kegs discarded afterwards.

University of Otago proctor Dave Scott said any students who were out of line at the event would be "subject to the university’s student code of conduct".

A Dunedin City Council spokesman said it  was "disappointed" by the actions of those involved and  would check the area for damage.
