Language week funding denied

The Dunedin City Council has rejected a request for $5000 to assist New Zealand Chinese Language Week, and its place in annual plan deliberations was questioned.

Cr Marie Laufiso supported the submission from the New Zealand Chinese Language Week Trust, and said funding would assist to ‘‘acknowledge the shameful past of this country’’.

Cr Lee Vandervis asked ‘‘where is it going to end’’ when it came to funding requests.

Cr Steve Walker said annual plan deliberations were not the appropriate place to ask for the funding;

Cr David Benson-Pope asked whether other avenues should be recommended to ‘‘people trying to get a bite of the apple’’.

Council chief executive Sue Bidrose said it was hard to advise people of where to go prior to their application.

‘‘Submitters by law can submit on anything they like.’’

The request was rejected in a 13-2 vote.
