Love letter from the Leith

In celebration of Valentine's Day, one of Dunedin's oldest waterways has a video love letter to the people it shares the city with.

Created by the Otago Regional Council's intern from the University of Otago's Centre for Science Communication, A Love Letter from the Leith is told from the perspective of the Leith.

The waterway speaks of its relationship with people, from its beginnings initially with the indigenous Maori and then later with the people who colonised and built the city around it.

The letter ends with it speaking of reuniting with people as the banks of the Leith go through further development, removing walls allowing for better access to the water.

"You are fixing my weak points so I no longer pose a risk to you.

"Rather than just a concrete drain, I am a river ready to connect with you again."

The ORC said its Leith Flood Protection Scheme will soon be heading into a new phase.

"That’s how we show the river some love. Watch to learn about its love for you."
