Man hurt in brewery fall dies

A man injured in a fall at Speight's Brewery on Monday has died.

Ralph Ashenhurst (48), of Port Chalmers, died in Dunedin Hospital about 11am yesterday from injuries received, Southern District Command Centre deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said.

The death would be referred to the coroner, he said.

Mr Ashenhurst fell at 9am on Monday at the brewery in Rattray St.

It is understood he was working on a decommissioned lift in the brewery.

Robert Cameron, managing director Kone Elevators Australia and New Zealand, the company for which Mr Ashenhurst was working as a subcontractor, said he could not comment about the incident as it was being investigated by WorkSafe New Zealand.

Mr Ashenhurst's family had asked for privacy, Mr Cameron said.

A WorkSafe New Zealand spokesman confirmed it was investigating the incident.
