Man restarts jet ski before rescuers act

The driver of a jet ski stranded on a sand bank in Otago Harbour managed to make it to shore in gathering darkness on Saturday.

Police were alerted at 5.24pm that a man wearing a wetsuit was stuck on a broken-down jet ski on a sand bank in the middle of the harbour.

A witness told the Otago Daily Times they could see the man stuck on a sand bank near the West Harbour settlement of Burkes, trying repeatedly to restart the jet ski as darkness fell.

Police and St John ambulance staff responded, and the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter was dispatched, but all were stood down when the man eventually managed to restart the jet ski and make it to shore.
