A man was bottled and transported to Dunedin Hospital with injuries after a 21st party at a rural Otago rugby club erupted into violence, police say.

Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman, of Dunedin, said police were called to the disorder in Milton on Saturday evening.

Dunedin police responded to a request for back-up from Milton police as they were dealing with "aggressive patrons at a 21st party at the Toko Rugby Club".

There were reports of "multiple fights", Acting Snr Sgt Notman said.

Back-up arrived and the event settled down.

But police were called back again, several hours later, to reports of further disorder.

They removed a man "who received injuries from a bottling".

Police transporting the man to Dunedin Hospital themselves.

No arrests were made and further inquiries were continuing, Acting Snr Sgt Notman said.
