A public meeting to ''brainstorm'' ideas to protect the future of the Mosgiel Railway Station was announced yesterday.

Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board chairwoman Sarah Nitis said the meeting next month would be an open forum for people to discuss potential options for the station.

It had been empty since Blackie Catlow, who has since died, moved out his business, Mosgiel Station Cafe and Function Centre, earlier this year.

The board was arranging the meeting but was not leading the project, she said.

She hoped the meeting would be the start of a group, or trust, being formed, which would decide on a ''viable use'' for the building and move the project forward.

''We want to see if there are people out there who have some ideas and want to develop them.''

The meeting was in response to feedback given to her by the community.

The message from the community was they wanted the station to be preserved.

''There is a call from the community to protect it ... they think it's an important part of Mosgiel and Mosgiel's history.''

Anyone interested in the fate of the station was invited to attend a public ''brainstorming'' meeting, she said.

The meeting is at Weavers in Factory Rd, Mosgiel, at 11.30am on July 18.

A KiwiRail spokeswoman said KiwiRail was marketing the station with an agent in an ''endeavour'' to find a suitable new tenant and keep the building occupied.

''KiwiRail intends to lease the station at a fair market rent.''

The station was not listed with Heritage New Zealand or the Dunedin District Council's Heritage Register, she said.
