Menacing dog must wear a muzzle

The Dunedin dog that attacked a delivery woman has been classified as menacing and must wear a muzzle when away from its property.

A woman was bitten on the leg by a Labrador-cross dog, while she was attempting to deliver prescription medicine to a house in Bedford Pde, Brighton, on Wednesday.

Dunedin City Council environmental health and animal services manager Ros MacGill said interviews of the victim and dog owner revealed a "misunderstanding'' of the delivery instructions.

The instructions given directed the woman to a door of the house, where she would not have come in contact with the dog.

The woman had attempted to make the delivery to the door as instructed, but the dog owner did not hear her at the door because he was vacuuming.

The woman then walked towards another door in the house and was bitten by the dog.

The council had instructed the dog owner to install a gate to block the area where the woman was attacked.

The gate had to have a sign warning people of a dog being on the other side.

As a result of the attack, the dog had been classified as menacing and had to be muzzled if taken away from the property.
