Passengers baled out of vintage cars struggling up the hills around Mosgiel during the Model T Ford Club's winter solstice run on Saturday.

Co-organiser Donna Millar said more than 20 club members, wrapped in fur caps, goggles, driving gloves and blankets, took part in the seventh annual run.

''Many have no windows, and some chose to bravely drive au naturel, with the top down, in order to fully enjoy the drive and the scenery,'' Ms Millar said.

Some cars battled on the hills and passengers were amused when they had to lighten the load.

The event was started by Nevin Gough, who owns a 1918 Model T Ford delivery van.

Participants from Mosgiel, Dunedin, Wanaka and Christchurch gathered at the Mosgiel Station Cafe.

The route went over Saddle Hill and Scroggs Hill, through Brighton, then to Wingatui and Outram, for lunch at the Taieri Historical Society's park and museum, to Woodside Manor and returned to Mosgiel.

• The club's next event is on September 27-28. For information, phone 489-8704 (after 2pm) or visit www.modelt.co.nz.
