Isaac Koh (9), of Dunedin, was one of  about 700 people in the city to celebrate the Chinese Moon Festival yesterday.

Activities including calligraphy and moon cake making as well as performances by Otago Chinese cultural groups were held at the Chinese Garden to celebrate the festival.

Dunedin Chinese Garden visitor services officer Danny Still said the festival was the second biggest on the Chinese calender,  after the Chinese new year.

"The history of celebrating the moon and having a festival goes back about 3000 years."

The festival was attended by Christchurch Chinese consul-general Jin Zhijian, Mr Still said.

The garden had celebrated the festival since it opened in 2008.
