Blend Espresso received a message from a woman in the United Kingdom recently, wanting to organise coffee and cake to be delivered to her best friend in Mosgiel for her 50th birthday last week.
Cafe owner Kaylene Matthews said they were happy to help, and organised for the woman to make a bank transfer.
But, after realising the exorbitant bank fees that would come with it, and the difficulties those in the UK were facing with Covid, they decided to treat the birthday girl free of charge.
‘‘We wanted to do a ‘pay it forward’ gesture,’’ she said.
‘‘We know it’s hard, with Covid, to be there for things.’’
The lucky recipient was Karen Bosworth, who was thrilled when staff arrived on her doorstep with the tasty treat last week.
‘‘I thought it would be nice for them to be recognised for doing something nice. They didn’t shout about it.’’
