Port Otago commercial manager Peter Brown said the huge machine was being moved to Oceania Dairy Ltd’s factory at Glenavy.
‘‘Port Otago is managing Oceania Dairy’s export cargo logistics in partnership with local companies Icon Logistics and Dynes Transport,’’ he said.
The crane will be used to move containers at the dairy company’s Glenavy depot.
A Port Chalmers resident last night said she had never seen such a big piece of equipment on the move on the road.
The move was being well handled, with many support vehicles, she said.
Mr Brown said the crane would be taken to Glenavy via Middlemarch.
