The generosity of Otago people has overwhelmed Dunedin mother Shirley Turner after publicity last week about the plight of her 2-year-old son who has cerebral palsy.
The family plan to take Caleb to the United States and Mexico for an umbilical cord stem-cell transplant, an experimental treatment which appears to be showing good results for other children with cerebral palsy.
Mrs Turner said she had received many calls, offers of support and even "a beautiful card through the post" from people she did not know.
"It is quite amazing really . . . I wish I knew who they all were so I could thank them personally."
They leave with Caleb in about five weeks and are fundraising to help cover the costs of the trip estimated at $40,000.
Anybody wishing to make a donation can do so at any ASB Bank, into the Caleb Turner Treatment Trust.
