Musicians work their magic

Delight shows on the faces of pupils at Arthur Street School, Dunedin, yesterday as the Southern Sinfonia performs during a tour - and bassoonist Joe Donnelly shows his style.

The sounds of Mozart, Dvorak, Pirates of the Caribbean and Sponge Bob Square Pants will grace the halls of about 20 primary schools in the Dunedin area during this week's tour.

Joining Mr Donnelly on tour are Sandra Crawshaw (piano and violin), Juno Pyun (violin, clarinet and saxophone), Mike Steer (double bass), Betty Kao (oboe and cor anglais), Jerome Rouse (French horn) and Maddy Parkins-Craig (percussion). They are giving interactive concerts which introduce the pupils to the instruments of the orchestra, and to the music they can perform.

The 45-minute performances are designed to be fun, informative and inspire pupils to consider learning a musical instrument. REPORT: JOHN LEWIS/PHOTO: PETER MCINTOSH
