Colin Crow, of Dunedin, cops a shower of sea water during his swim at the St Clair Salt Water Pool yesterday.

While large waves crashed over the protective wall, the temperature of the pool remained a warm 28degC.

Dunedin City Council Moana Pool manager Nicola Smith said from November 2017 to the end of January, 37,293 people used the pool, compared with 15,381 over the corresponding period last year.

It was not unusual for an occasional large wave to come in over the wall and it usually meant removing bits of seaweed and vacuuming the pool, she said.
