Octagon car-free

Eagles  fans flocking to Dunedin for the group's show next weekend will be able to soak up the atmosphere in a car-free lower Octagon.

From 4am on Saturday to 9am the next day, the lower Octagon will be closed to traffic for the Eagles concert at Forsyth Barr Stadium. A lunchtime concert will be held on Saturday.

Dunedin City Council events and community development manager Joy Gunn said the council hoped the addition of entertainment, street furniture and food trucks would bring more vibrancy to the area for the large number of visitors and locals expected for the concert.

Last year part of the street and the lower Octagon was pedestrian during Ed Sheeran's three concerts at Easter.

Of the 550 people surveyed during the five-day trial more than 90% rated the experience positive. In its 10-year plan, the council has budgeted $150,000 for a series of pedestrian trials in the Octagon and lower Stuart St over the next two years.
