Holding up a box of food before it is sent out to Dunedin foodbanks is Highlander Josh Dickson at the We Can! Community Can Appeal at Forsyth Barr Stadium yesterday.

Highlander Bill Harmon said Otago rugby players and cricketers were at the stadium collecting cans for Dunedin foodbanks yesterday.

Supporters gear was given away to those with large donations.

It was hard to tell how much food had been collected, but one van was "pretty chocka" by the afternoon and there was more food coming in.

Otago Volts cricketer Michael Rae said it was nice to be able to give back to the community, especially coming up to Christmas when there were a lot of families in need.

Many foodbanks were lacking food and the drive would help resupply their stocks, he said.
