About 15 dogs of various breeds and sizes gathered alongside about 30 of their human companions as hymns were sung, prayers said and candles lit to remember pets who had died.
The Right Reverend Steven Benford said animals undoubtedly played an important part in many people’s lives and the service was one way of showing appreciation for all pets.
Run in conjunction with SPCA Otago, the service is dedicated to St Francis of Assisi and is held near his feast day of October 4.
