Person serious after rescue at St Clair

A person has been airlifted to hospital after being rescued at St Clair beach in Dunedin this morning.

Emergency services were alerted around 6.23am that someone was in the water.

Police and St John initially attended, but because of difficulties gaining access to the person, a rescue helicopter was called in, a police spokeswoman said.

The person was retrieved by the helicopter crew and taken to Dunedin Hospital.

A St John spokesman said they were in a moderate to serious condition.
