Three Otago rugby players swapped rugby balls for paint brushes to raise money for charity this week.

Hayden Parker, Josh Renton and Hisa Sasagi painted two mugs each at Gone Potty in Dunedin on Monday.

Their handiwork will be auctioned to raise money for the Moray Trust Foundation.

The foundation is an interest-free loan charity which helps those in need with health, welfare, education and debt consolidation loans.

Moray Trust Foundation co-ordinator Sara Crow said the mugs would be sold at an auction.

"[The money] goes back into helping people.''

Gone Potty owner Bridget Paape said she was impressed with the players' painting.

"They have done a fabulous job considering they are not painters.''

She said she mentioned the idea after she had done a similar fundraiser in Queenstown.

"I know how much people love rugby players.''

The six mugs were decorated with a fish, a plane and lots of colour.

"I just painted until it started to look like something,'' Parker said.

"It sounds like lots of colours is the way to go.''
