Police appeal after alleged assault

Police are appealing for information after an alleged assault in the Dunedin Botanic Garden on Wednesday night.

Anyone who might have noticed a man acting suspiciously near the walking tracks beside Lovelock Ave, about 7pm, was urged to contact police.

Detective John MacDade said police were seeking a man described as Caucasian, aged 18-24, about 177cm, slim, clean-shaven and with long, blond scruffy hair.

He was described as wearing baggy clothing - believed to be scruffy denim shorts - and a dark beanie. He was carrying a black backpack and possibly a skateboard.

Police declined to comment on the nature of the assault.

Anyone with information was urged to call Dunedin police on 471-4800. A man was spotted trying car doors in Tainui on Wednesday night.

Sergeant Dion Phair, of Dunedin, said the incident occurred in Dundonald St, about 6.45pm.

A dog patrol was unable to track the man.

There had been a series of car thefts around the area, and residents were advised to report any suspicious behaviour to police on 471-4800.
