Police called off a high-speed pursuit near East Taieri yesterday in the interests of public safety, after a motorcyclist reached speeds estimated at more than 180kmh.
Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said a police patrol spotted a motorcyclist travelling south on the wrong side of SH1 between East Taieri and Allanton, travelling at an estimated 185kmh about 11am.
A passing motorist also called police.
The police pursuit lasted only a matter of seconds before the patrol decided not to continue, Snr Sgt Benn said.
"If we had continued, it would have increased the danger to the public."
The motorcyclist turned off SH1 at Allanton and was last seen heading towards Outram, he said.
"That's atrocious driving.
"With those speeds and the manner in which he was driving, he is liable for serious traffic charges. He's putting himself and other motorists at considerable risk."
Snr Sgt Benn said the bike was described as dark-coloured with a black fuel tank, and the rider was wearing black leathers.
He asked anyone who knew who the rider might be to call Dunedin police.
