A police spokeswoman said the officer, who police say was believed to have had a medical event before the crash, was convalescing at home and continued to receive outpatient care.

Witnesses said he was slumped at the wheel as his car sped up York Pl in Dunedin before colliding with three cars, a lamppost and a school bus about 8.30am last Wednesday.

The crash trapped Dunedin mother Ashley Rolleston between two vehicles moments after she had placed her baby in a car-seat.

She sustained seven fractured ribs, a punctured lung and a lacerated liver, and was discharged from hospital last Friday.

Speaking as she recovered at home yesterday, Ms Rolleston said it took several days for the seriousness of the incident to sink in.

''It's taken me a few days to realise ... it wasn't actually a bad dream.

''I've had a few flashbacks.''

Her daughter, who has her first birthday party tomorrow, suffered a bruise on her head and a scratch on her nose, but was otherwise happy and unharmed, she said.

''She's her normal little bubbly self.''
