A man is in police custody after an attack in Taieri Mouth where another man's hand was injured after being cut with a machete.

The second man was taken to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter with serious injuries. It is believed his hand was almost severed in the attack.

A police communications spokeswoman said Dunedin and Balclutha Police were called to the attack just after midday, after a man had cut the hand of another man with a machete.

A man from Taieri Mouth said he saw a police car drive into the community just after 12:30pm.

The injury was believed to be from a domestic incident.

No charges have been laid at this early stage, but  investigations are continuing.

A woman stood crying on the balcony as a man was led away by police.

The 33-year-old man in custody had blood smears across his face and distinctive tribal tattoos on his neck.

Police directed traffic past the property on the main Brighton Taieri Mouth road as an injured man was stretchered from the property.
