Distinctive muscle car stolen in Dunedin

Police are searching for an American muscle car that was stolen from central Dunedin on Thursday night.

The burgundy 1976 Ford Torino saloon was parked in High St when it was stolen, Acting Senior Sergeant Phill Hamlin said.

The owner parked his vehicle near the Dunedin District Court about 10.30pm.

‘‘After visiting a nearby address he returned at [11.30pm] to find the vehicle missing,’’ he said.

‘‘It was left locked and secure.

The vehicle had distinctive dual stripes on its bonnet, roof and boot, and a custom registration plate ‘‘76V8’’.

‘‘Police are appealing for anybody who may have seen this vehicle recently to call Dunedin police [on] 471-4800,’’ Snr Sgt Hamlin said.

‘‘We are aware that the original number plates may no longer be on the vehicle, but the burgundy colour and the stripes make it a fairly distinctive vehicle.’’

There were no reports of the vehicle as of yesterday afternoon.
