Police were called to the scene of a car crash outside Cargill House in Princes St, about 9.30am yesterday after reports of a fight.
''The occupants of the cars involved in the crash started fighting. One of the men was believed to have a stick,'' a police spokeswoman said
When police arrived at the scene about seven minutes later, the cars were gone, she said.
Fairfax reported a patu-wielding man swung at another man during a gang altercation.
A late-model BMW, understood to have been rammed in the crash, was later seen parked in Carroll St.
