Grandstand fire arrest

Dunedin police have charged a 15-year-old youth  with arson following a fire in the Otago Boys’ High School grandstand earlier this month.

Members of the public called Fire and Emergency New Zealand about 9.30pm on August 1, when they noticed a small fire at the facility.

The fire was quickly extinguished and fire authorities treated it as suspicious.

Detective Constable Reece Munro said the youth was bailed to appear in the Dunedin Youth Court on August 16.

"While the damage to the stand was minor, it could have been worse if not for the quick actions from members of the public who alerted the fire service, who responded immediately."

The youth  is not a pupil at the school.
