Portobello properties still without water

Hopes that water would be restored to properties in the Portobello, Dunedin, area by 8pm today were dashed by a further complication that apparently occurred while contractors were working on repairs, about 7pm.

A Dunedin City Council spokeswoman said a water main had initially been damaged while contractors were doing electrical work on a pump on Portobello Rd.

A water tanker was being sent to the area and would be parked next to the Portobello Hotel for any residents that need water.

A spokeswoman earlier apologised for the inconvenience.

The council's Facebook page suggested water would be restored about 11pm, and the spokeswoman said that, despite difficult terrain and the need to be careful to avoid cables in the area, water was, in fact, expected to be restored by 10.30pm.
