Two helicopters were put on stand-by last night after two small fires sparked by downed power lines broke out in the Dunedin suburb of Sawyers Bay.

Fire crews initially could not reach the blazes due to fallen power lines in the Reservoir Rd area, near the Port Chalmers Golf Club.

Emergency services were called about 7.15pm, and by 8.20pm the fires were contained.

Crews from Ravensbourne and Port Chalmers attended with support from rural firefighters.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand southern communications manager Andrew Norris said the fires ``had potential to take off but at about 9pm they declared both fires out''.

Rural firefighters remained at the scene afterwards to dampen down the ground.
