President for 18 years given life membership

Lesley Prescott thought she was just going to a ladies' afternoon tea. Instead she became a life member of an association she has been part of for more than 40 years.

Mrs Prescott (79) was named an honorary life member of the Pioneer Women's Memorial Association last week after joining in the mid-1960s. The association looks after the Otago Pioneer Women's Memorial Building in Moray Place.

"I feel very honoured. It was a very big surprise,'' Mrs Prescott, who stood down as president in May, said.

Throughout her time with the association, she took on many roles, including president and treasurer.

She joined the committee in the early 1990s, took on the role of treasurer in 1993 and became president in 1998.

She came to know the job well, as she was president for 18 years, commenting she only stayed in the role so long "because nobody else wanted the job''.

Mrs Prescott joined the committee after she was convinced by another member, Mrs Joy Clapham.

"I have enjoyed the meetings and being part of this organisation. The committees over the years have been excellent. Everybody works together.''

When asked about her best memories, Mrs Prescott said it was the people she had met over the years.
