Work continues on the St Kilda Fire Station, in Queens Dr, Dunedin, this week.

The station was built in 1964 and, apart from some structural work in 1991, has had only minor repairs carried out over the past 50 years.

The upgrade includes structural strengthening, a new sprinkler and fire alarm system, reroofing, locker room and decontamination wash facility, new open-plan office and bedroom refurbishment. The project is expected to be completed by early to mid November.

St Kilda firefighters are based at the Dunedin City Station during the work.

East Otago area commander Laurence Voight said response times to the South Dunedin area had not been affected.
