Three Otago teenagers were part of a group of 60 who travelled to Auckland for the Sir Peter Blake Youth EnviroLeader Forum last week.

Tasman Charteris-Wright, of Bayfield High School, Ben Mitchell, of John McGlashan College and Natalie Candy, of Blue Mountain College, were among a group from New Zealand and the Pacific Islands who gathered to learn about the ocean environment.

The forum, which ran for a week and finished on Monday, had an emphasis on marine pollution, ocean biodiversity, marine protected areas and ocean health.

The idea of the forum was to equip those attending with skills and knowledge and provide a strong network of young environmental leaders ready to create change across New Zealand and the Pacific.

During the week they were challenged to develop leadership skills and strategies to address environmental issues within their schools and communities, as well as having fun and making lifelong friends and connections.

Sir Peter Blake Trust chief executive Shelley Campbell said the programme was a transformative week for those who attended.

''It's amazing to see how much they develop in one week and this is just the beginning of their journey with us.''
